Stanley Native Joins Extraordinary Greenland Expedition
Stanley native Dr. Jon Solberg was part of a seven-man, 21 day expedition that crossed one of the harshest environments on earth: Greenland’s ice sheet. Using specialized Arctic-equipped Toyota trucks, the team completed a 1,400‑plus‑mile journey along the ice sheet’s long axis in 2018, a south-to-north-and-back crossing that had never before been accomplished. Their effort is documented in the feature film Expedition: Greenland.
The mission tested every limit of endurance and leadership. Team members drove in continuous shifts of up to 75 hours, established only seven campsites across the entire ice sheet, and relied completely on collaboration and decision‑making under extreme pressure. Part of the larger “Expeditions 7” project - an effort to drive on all seven continents - the film captures both the stark beauty of Greenland’s untouched interior and the human story of resilience, trust, and purpose.
Expedition: Greenland will be shown on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on the campus of Minot Statue University. Following the screening, Dr. Solberg will appear in person for conversation and audience Q&A, reflecting on risk, teamwork, leadership, and what extreme environments reveal about the human spirit.
The event is designed for medical professionals, students, outdoor enthusiasts, business leaders, friends and lifelong learners, blending adventure storytelling with meaningful humanities reflection on courage, responsibility, and perseverance.
The Study, formerly HumanitiesND, is presenting this screening on four North Dakota campuses: BSC, MSU, UND, and NDSU. The event is free and open to the public, family‑friendly, and family‑encouraged.
