Blue Jay Girls Drop Three

Stanley’s varsity girls’ basketball team had three games on their schedule last week. They hosted Watford City on Monday, Jan. 26, losing by a score of 48 to 70. On Tuesday, Jan. 27, they were in Minot to face Nedrose, losing by a score of 56 to 63 in double overtime. They were in Rugby on Friday, Jan. 29, losing by a score of 35 to 56.
Stanley vs. Watford City
The Blue Jays were at home on Monday, Jan. 26 to face the Watford City Wolves. The Wolves took an eleven point lead at the end of the first quarter, adding to their lead in each of the remaining quarters to take the 70 to 48 victory.
Head coach Kendell Hunt said, “We played with great effort all night and our transition defense was outstanding from start to finish. We did have more turnovers than we normally do, and unfortunately some of those turned into easy buckets for Watford City. They’re a tough team, but I thought we matched and exceeded their intensity and effort level throughout.”
CeeJay Bohmbach and Annie Roise led the team with 9 points each, followed by Payton Lystad with 7, Jacee Johnson with 5, Taya Niemitalo, Carly Rismon and Kiplee Nordloef with 4 each, Evy Davis with 3, Maycee Copeland with 2, and Kennedi Murphy with 1.
Annie Roise had 11 rebounds, followed by Payton Lystad with 6, CeeJay Bohmbach with 5, Jacee Johnson, Maycee Copeland and Kennedi Murphy with 4 each, Taya Niemitalo with 2, and Evy Davis, Carly Rismon and Kiplee Nordloef with 1 each.
Taya Niemitalo had 4 assists, followed by Evy Davis with 2, and Annie Roise and Kennedi Murphy with 1 each.

Stanley vs. Nedrose
On the road on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Blue Jays were in Minot to play the Nedrose Cardinals. The Blue Jays held a six point lead at the half, but the Cardinals came back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. The teams were even again at the end of the first overtime, but Nedrose was able to come out on top at the end of the second overtime to win by a score of 63 to 56.
Head coach Hunt said, “This was our third matchup with Nedrose this season, ending up in double overtime in an incredible atmosphere. Credit to their fan base and those of ours who traveled. You don’t get to feel the crowd like that often. Even though the scoreboard didn’t go our way, we’re able to come out of there with that extended experience of possession importance and we can build upon it.”

Stanley vs. Rugby
The Blue Jays were on the road again on Friday, Jan. 29 for their final game of the week. They met up with the Rugby Panthers, who controlled the game on their way to the 56 to 35 victory.
Head coach Hunt said, “Rugby played in your shorts defense the entire game, and we struggled to find our offensive rhythm. On the defensive end, our positioning, rotations and communication were some of the best we’ve played all year. We had too many unforced errors but those are fixable, and we need to turn those extra possessions into quality shot attempts as we head into the stretch run.”
Jacee Johnson led the team with 10 points, followed by Annie Roise and Kennedi Murphy with 8 each, Kiplee Nordloef with 4, CeeJay Bohmbach with 3 and Payton Lystad with 2.
