Blue Jay Boys At Devils Lake

Stanley’s varsity boys’ basketball team was in action last week at the Devils Lake Shootout. The Blue Jays faced number one ranked Four Winds-Minnewauken on Friday, dropping that game by a score of 17 to 90. On Saturday, they met up with Grafton, losing by a score of 46 to 90.
Head coach Kory Anderson said, “We started our trip to Devils Lake to take on top ranked Four Winds and powerhouse Grafton by stopping by the Minot Men’s Winter Refuge to drop off winter hats and gloves. It was a great opportunity for our boys to see that their influence can be bigger than a game and that it is more important to win in life than on a court, although we keep working hard to win at both!
Our Stanley boys really enjoyed the preparation for taking on Four Winds. We focused on off-ball physicality and trying to be bigger than we truly are. We got down big early, but showed some heart by not quitting. The best part of it is the boys understand the difference between us and them, and understand that we need to fight hard to put in the time it takes to become more skilled.
It was a fun first half against Grafton. The first half was competitive and we were a few shots/breaks away from really shaking things up. It was fun to see our boys fight so hard to compete. As a coach, when you see different guys fighting hard on defense and doing all they can to get that ball back, it gets exciting. Their fight on defense early led to some big shots in the first half by multiple guys. In the end, Grafton proved to be too much as they had two elite scorers that we couldn’t stop.”
Facing Four Winds, the Warriors got out to that quick start, holding a 46 to 9 lead over the Blue Jays at the half on their way to the 90 to 17 victory.
Tyke Barstad led the team with 10 points, followed by Austin Kanenwisher, Ashton Peterson and Landon Hunting with 2 each, followed by Jevon Johnson with 1.
Stanley    2    7    4    4 - 17
Four Winds    26  20  30  14 - 90
Against Grafton, the Blue Jays trailed by eight at the end of the first quarter and 19 at the half as the Spoilers went on to win the game by a score of 90 to 46.
Jevon Johnson led the team with 21 points, followed by Austin Kanenwisher with 8, Ashton Peterson with 7, Tyke Barstad with 6, and Zeke Wienbar and Landon Goettle with 2 each.
Stanley    14  10    5  17 - 46
Grafton    22  21  30  17 - 90
Up Next: After hosting Hazen on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Blue Jays will host Nedrose on Thursday, Jan. 29 and Bottineau on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
