State 4-H Agronomy Contest Held

Mountrail County 4-H’ers performed well at the State 4-H Agronomy Contest, held March 14th in Carrington.
The Junior Team of three took home third place. Spencer Enerson led the charge, placing 6th individual out of forty-five. In just his first year of Agronomy judging, Spencer scored an impressive 655 points out of 800. Fifth grader Eden Feldman followed close behind, placing 8th and scoring 643 points. Oliver Mell rounded out the team with 18th place and a score of 553 points. Classes in the Junior contest include three classes of Seed Grain Grading, Plant ID, Seed ID, Insect and Equipment ID, Market Grading, and Market Factors.
The Senior Team consisted of Trent Feldman, with 747 points, and Dayne Lund with 617 points. Along with a student from Walsh County, they placed fifth as a team. In addition to all the above classes, Seniors must evaluate Soils and Disorders. Insect ID also includes identification of lifecycle, mouthparts, and economic damage, and the Market Grading requires additional spots for protein percent and grade determining factors. A perfect score of 1100 points in this contest is very rare.
Trent and Dayne also placed in the FFA Contest, with Trent receiving a Silver award and Dayne receiving a Bronze award. The participants in this contest range from 7th to 12th grade.
Coaches Julie Woodbury and Rochelle Feldman bring their experiences as Agriculture Education teacher and crop farmer to the classroom. The knowledge these young 4-H/FFA members are gaining can help them pursue careers in grain farming, Agronomist, weed or soil scientist, entomologist, Ag teacher, and many other fields.
Congratulations and a job well done to our Mountrail County Agronomy Team!
