New Meats Class Sessions Underway

The second of seven scheduled classes was held at the Mountrail County South Complex on Wednesday, Jan. 28 as Mountrail County Ag Agent Jim Hennessy is offering his meat classes to the public. These classes are some of the most popular in the area and bring both new and returning participants each year. Wednesday’s class was a jerky making class, while the first was held in Plaza on January 14 and featured country sausage making.
The hands on classes teach the basics of meat handling and preparation from field to table. Participants learn the advantages of using different types of meats, seasonings, casings, add-ins and more. Each class focuses on different meats, but the premise is the same, as they focus on both safety and great ways to make these products at home.
Future classes will include a hard salami/pepperoni class on Wednesday, Feb. 4 starting at 5:00 p.m. at the Mountrail County Plaza Shop in Plaza. There is a buck bacon making class set for Wednesday, Feb. 18 starting at 5:00 p.m. at the Mountrail County South Complex in Stanley. The remaining schedule is for a cured meats class on March 4, summer sausage on March 18, and brats/polish sausage on April 1, all at the Mountrail County South Complex.
Preregistration for the classes is required as well as prepayment for the classes. You can register by contacting the Mountrail County Ag Agency at 701-628-2835. More information about class availability can also be found on the Mountrail County Ag Agency Facebook page.
Preregistration and prepayment are required no later than the Friday before the session. Youth and adult registrations are accepted. Recommended age of attendance is 10 years and older.
Participants in all classes get sample products throughout the evening. They also get to take home what they make over the course of the night.
